From: ddrake01 I've been catching up on my mail after the holiday weekend. A couple of late responses follow. Dr. J writes: I have had considerable personal experience of tunnel vision underwater (no, I don't need a larger mask :-)). After swimming flat <end> I have done a considerable amount of exhaustive cross-country running where one becomes very narrow minded (different from some of the mud-slingers we've heard from of late). Some in athletes call it focusing on a goal and blocking out the rest of the world. I no longer compete or run, but think that CO2 build-up is more prevalent a problem than people may admit. I'm not knowledge able enough to separate the hypoxia symptoms from possible CO2 problems, but feel the CO2 would be more of a problem under water where high ppO2 should mean you have enough O2 for your body's needs during heavy work loads. I find the rebreather comments about CO2 symptoms very interesting. Until we have a way of determining the problems occuring from high CO2 & O2 partial pressures acting together, *I* will be very conservative about risking my life or those of my team/buddies when it comes to high exertion diving. I want to keep my diving bill limited to $ not bodily functions. Jason, how has your body suffered from the abuse created by diving accidents? NEXT TOPIC-Richard writes: Just paint the tank brown and label it as "argon-toxic" and you've got yourself an argon system. Am I making any sense here? or am I the only one who likes to build stuff like this? Richard<end> Thanks for the info. I've got my own system that I built, but found a couple of pieces of info in your post useful. I love to build and be able to sustain, at least, my own equipment. Please keep the ideas and info coming. Flex the muscle power of the net to solve problems and influence people. You can also save a ton of $US or Canadian or Australian or DM, etc. The overpressure valves thru Divers Supply (not the one in Fl) are not adjustable, but are cheaper. You can find out what pressure the go at by using an adapter on a high pressure port and connecting the reg to a tank with low pressure in it. If you don't understand what I'm talking about, don't try it. TOPIC 3: r. b. grumbles about Tech Nitrox cards: I understand the need for training, but when people have been doing something as simple as O2 deco for years the thought in my mind is that they simply want to squeeze a couple of more bucks from me. I do not mind at all paying for training that I need and will use. I do think however most of the technical training I have been exposed to has been rather "dumbed down". But the dives were fun as they always are!<end> I figure it this way. As more people come into the sport with more market potential following them, we all benefit from improved commercial products that become cheaper with volume. In a high risk activity, regulation soon follows. I'm as irritated as everyone about have to take 3 courses to become Tech Nitrox cert. So I comped out and was truely pissed when I found that the Tech Nitrox course offered me maybe 1, count that O-N-E, chapter's worth of really new material over "Nitrox Diver" and did not cover topics I felt it should. I console myself with the fact that many people new to the Nitrox arena will need the redundacy of three courses to help keep them alive and thus our new improved recreation. I'm still fuming about the $8 Canadian charge for diving in Five Fathoms Park, Tobermory. We're fighting the Governer in Michigan and the Department of Natural Resources on regulation and user fees now too. I use the net and other networks of friends to find out about good stuff. As George said, yes G. I., I'm giving you credit here! "I wished someone would have kept me from wasting my money" or time, effort, and life for that matter. Techdiver is here for those reasons among others. I say work around the problems best you can. RB, get the agency to give you a current equivalent card (Tech Nitrox) and shame on them for not instructing shops that Old Fart cards are good money too. Also, be tolerant of safety efforts, but let's effectively lobby those people that have influence to keep things within reason instead of preaching to the choir on techdiver.Use the pen/phone/vote and sword if applicable to good influence instead of sticking your head in the reef/cave/wreck and hoping the regulation storm blows by you. R. Bell was it? What was so nice about Crossunder tunnel at Madison Blue? P.S. Please again, put your name/adress on the bottom of the note text either manually or automated like mine which strips off all the mail info except that messages are from techdiver. Thanks. David B.
