Although share your skepticism of people who promote nitrox as a fashion
accessory (when are they going to come out with green & yellow dive skins to
color coordinate with nitrox cylinders?), and most of my open water dives are
on air, I disagree with you that there is no real need for nitrox in the open
water - not everyone dives in those toasty warm 72 degree caves.

For example, I am planning a 128' wreck dive this Sunday.  By the Navy tables,
a 45 minute dive requires 54 minutes of hang time.  I can do the same dive on
EAN30 and hang for 34 minutes.  When the water is still in the low 40's, as it
is here in New England, cutting 20 minutes of deco is worth a few extra bucks
for nitrox.
