The Abyss feature list should be kept to private mail unless explicitly requested by a number of list members. I think that if we open this list to advertising, then the volume will get noticably higher than it is now. Add to the ads the inevitable discussions that ensue from any posting, both from us mere consumers and other advertisers (in what other media do advertisers get to directly dispute each other's claims?) and you have what I would consider an intolerable volume of information being sent into my inbox. I don't mind advertising in other, more voluntary distribution formats, like WWW pages or other formats whose contents I am not forced to scan in order to get my daily work done. I personally have to read at least the start of every message I get, because subject lines are not enough to tell whether the mail is from techdiver, or from a business colleague. Bearing the desirable goal of a high signal-to-noise ratio in mind, I strongly urge that if commercial advertising is allowed, that a separate mailing list be formed for that purpose.
