Brian, A stroke is simply someone with an unsafe attitude. It's someone you want to avoid. Dives tend to go badly around these people. They tend to take unnecessary risks. Although one's equipment setup is often a dead giveaway to how safe someone is, it can sometimes be deceiving. Some non-DIR configured people have safe attitudes. Similarily, some people with a DIR gear configuration can be completely unsafe divers who take unnecessary risks.
