Most people aren't in it for the bragging rights, and those that are won't be around all that long. The people I dive with want to have fun and do it in a safe manner. What is impressive is the ability to execute difficult dives safely and with a consistent record of doing so. People are now holding their breath and going to 500 ft or so. Going there on SCUBA in an unsafe manner is neither impressive nor smart, and it certainly doesn't sound like fun, unless you have a death wish.
