Subject: batteries for scooters
Date: Fri, 27 Dec 2002 07:19:49 -0500

Let me repeat this again. The new Powersonic 33 ah batteries now weigh as
much as the Panasonics and Yuasas - up to five pounds more per set then the
old bats weighed. This will not fly with the standard 33 ah PVC Gavin
scooters with the heavy bulkheads and spacers. There are three solutions: 1)
buy the AGM 35 ah batteries ( any of them) as they are the correct weight
and burn longer than the new , heavier gel batteries, 2) use the lighter
bulkheads and spacers ( costs more than the batteries ), 3) use a longer
tube , rods, and different bulkheads ( costs more than the batteries). I
have these for those who would rather spend a bunch of money than by two $40
batteries ( yes, AGM are the cheapest).

The HDPE 33 scooter is not effected by this since it takes the heavier bats
to start with and has different bulkheads, or uses AGM with weight added.

New PVC 33's will be offered with either type of setup to start with to
accommodate those who can not get AGM batteries, and because there are other
batteries that weight a little more starting to show up which may give more
burn time and make it worth using the longer tube, even though I have not
found any advantage yet. I originally made the scooters too long on purpose
in anticipation of this, but they went a lot further on weight than I
thought they would.

The 26 ah version uses different batteries for the PVC than the HDPE, so
don't mix that up or you will have to add a bunch of weight to the HDPE
scooter or sink the other one.

The Magnum uses any number of batteries from 40 ah to 50 ah, all of which
work.

The little scooters use any of the 16-18 ah batteries other than the
metal-jacketed variety which will only be good for salt water diving.

Sorry about the moving parts, but we do have plenty of solutions here.
