Hi Jason,
I'm not sure I have one. Perhaps we need to 'modulise' the top end
certification. Maybe this would allow people time to become confident
with new theory/skills in bits before continuing on. This could
happen right now, except that most instructors tend to cram it into
a few days (I guess money is playing hard on this one!)
The difficult part is checking any 'credentials' that are required
as a pre-requisite for a particular type of training. I know
Billy Deans uses his personal assesment via in-water observation as
a big pointer towards somebody's potential skill level and suitability
for the training. It would of course be easier if it were possible
for groups to form that would hopefully help people with the new
skills in the real world. The problem is a lot of the time the
narrow mindedness of certain people shuns the interested bystander.
If somebody asks me - I try and explain - they may not understand,
but at least they have an answer.

I am sure there will be few more posts...................

Hi Chris,
Perhaps I'm not the one to comment on training. I'm a self taught mix
diver.
I'm wary of the idea of modulisation of information. Diving is essentialy
quite simple. Step 1. breath in, step 2. breath out, step 3. goto step 1.
Once you go past that, then the 'little knowledge is dangerous' thing
starts to apply. I think that you should be giving as much information
as you can in the course. The diver may not use it all, but as s/he
grows, then that info will come into play. You will (I think) find that
it starts to be used in the decision making process.
We have already seen the 'modularisation' of Nitrox training. :(
Nitrox diver, Advanced Nitrox, Technical Nitrox, Gas Mixer, Equipment
tech, etc, etc when all that could have been taught in one full day
of theory. (With *no* diving. What bloody use is it to breathe nitrox?
What do you learn from that? *Nothing* That part of the course is
*blatent* money making.)

So what can *we* do? I still don't know. Lead by example?
Can someone who knows jump in here?

Jason :)
