Jim, Go ahead, advertise for DIR. Hell, I'll do it . . . Folks, if you want the best tech instruction in the dive industry you can't do better than GUE. But if you're new to diving, you'll probably want to work with NAUI until and unless you enter GUE's realm. Don't waste your time and money with PADI, TDI/SDI, SSI or any of the other lame outfits with specious standards. BTW, I have no affiliation with GUE other than I was/am a member, that is unless my membership expired. Otherwise, I guess we're getting into personal experiences here. I personally have not had a large number of such bad experiences, although I have done a lot of diving on boats, liveaboards and resorts which are some of the places where you find these marginal divers. I find that I am able to avoid these people most of the time. Partially because I usually travel with friends and family and partially because I try to find competent people to dive with. Not that you don't. But Jim, if you want to limit your dive buddies to DIR-trained people only, by all means, you should do exactly that. You will arguably be safer than the rest of us non-discriminating folk who do not have such high standards for OW buds. But I am far safer with a buddy of my choosing, DIR or not, than I am diving alone in almost every case. JoeL -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
