There certainly does seem to be anecdotal evidence suggesting that deep stops might improve diving safety. This is particularly true for He/O2 diving but also possibly true for recreational diving. The physiological rationale exists to support a number of mechanisms to this effect. We have submitted a proposal for a human study of one potential mechanism. Decompression modeling would play a major role in a deep-stop workshop. I would imagine that one or more sessions would be devoted exclusively to modeling. That's good as there are various models that could use public airing. Both modeling and basic decompression mechanisms are important, but progress will be frustratingly slow without emphasis on the epidemiology of open water diving. As you know, this is a reason for DAN's Project Dive Exploration (PDE). We have collected some 45,000 computer-recorded dive profiles and medical outcomes from 5,000 divers of who about 26 were recompressed. Unfortunately, tech dives are not well represented in PDE data. I hope you might encourage tech divers to begin data collection. In fact, the best encouragement you could give would be to collect data yourself. While PDE may not be the only database of dive profiles and dive outcomes in the world, we have made an effort to standardize it and make it accessible. This is necessary when you need hundreds of thousands of dives for useful answers. The collection process has become simpler, and both Cochran and Dive Rite computers can now collect PDE data using their own dive log software. Please contact Petar for more information on these and other options. I guess I've also got to say that some folks at DAN and elsewhere are a bit gun-shy from recent and past unpleasantness on the net. I have heard concern that this could take the fun out of a workshop and limit its success. I would guess that raising financial support wouldn't be helped, either. I'm not sure what can be done, but it makes the job of the workshop organizers somewhat more difficult. I think planning for a deep stop workshop should go forward. First, you should identify an organizer or not more than a very small group of organizers. They could put together a tentative program and circulate it to potential speakers (and others) for comment. Major topics might include mechanisms, modeling, and empirical data. It would be useful to have specific workshop objectives in mind and to structure the program so the objectives might be met. The workshop cost will be significantly affected by where and when it is held. Ideally, it would be fairly central to speakers and interested attendees, but this might not be possible given the international nature of the subject. You might consider doing it in association with a national or international meeting, such as UHMS or EUBS, if you could convince one of these groups that there is sufficient material and adequate organization to make it worthwhile. That would reduce travel costs. Typical workshop costs are $20-30,000, but it might be done for less with some compromises. Charging attendees $100-200 per head would help to offset costs. I guess fund raising will be the greatest challenge, but I think it's worth the effort. Go for it. Dick -----Original Message----- From: Bruce R. Bruce Wienke Program Manager Computational Physics Counterterror And Countermeasures Dive Team Ldr PS -- UHMS Guys, maybe this is BETTER UHMS item? EARLIER MESSAGE TO PETER BENNETT WITH LIST EMAILS APPENDED Gentlemen, We don't agree with you, Peter Read below. Best regards as always, BW DEEP STOPS -- THE REAL STORY IN ADM Lists and Others, Check out the "Deep Stops" article in the next issue of Advanced Diver Magazine (ADM) for the real skinny on deeps stops and related deco technology. It was the tech diving community who pioneered, tested, and validated deep stops and related dual phase deco models (like RGBM, VPM, TBDM). Their 1000s of real dives on mixed gases at real depths are the living laboratory here. Not Haldane, nor Hill. And certainly not DAN. And our testing program was not recreational diving for goats in shallow water -- it was our collective asses, deep and long With fondest respect for DAN, I wish DAN would spend more time interacting with the tech community. All would benefit. The DAN Project Dive Exploration is a great data acquisition project that needs input from the real diving world. Same pretty much said for slow ascent rates.
