I remeber seeing the Al Giddings film about the I-169 'Shinohara' sub in Truk, where they had to winch open the hatch on the conning tower to gain access, then removed their fins and went inside. From what I recall, that was to prevent stirring up the silt inside and to INCREASE their mobility inside the tight confines of the sub (probably using the 'pull & glide' technique described earlier). Though I think they only had 1 person inside at a time and the standby outside made sure the fins didn't stray. Shame it's been blown open now.
