Couldn't agree more, not a diving issue at all! It's an issue of stupidity!
Boat shouldn't have been there and obviously those divers shouldn't have
been there either.

The real story here is not running a proper operation from a simple
seamanship point of view. This is not a diving issue, it is a dumb ass
issue. Most people who own or run boats don't have a clue, and that is why
we see what we see.

Subject: RE: This is why I don't Do Anchor diving
This is just stupid! To me it's more a reason not to drift dive. Drifting
in strong currents in 3 foot waves is not my idea of fun. Drift deco alone?
Just plain old dumb! He floated off in current and surfaced hours later?
What was he doing, drift deco or lost? If he was lost, why not tie off and
come up? Hell, nothing to tie off to, tie your goodie bag, tools whatever
to the end of the up line and drop it. Fill your bag with sand, something
to keep you semi rooted to the bottom. That boat shouldn't have even been
there. No wonder it didn't just drift off. Who was topside? No cell
phone? When on an unfamiliar site, run a line from where the anchor is tied
in so you can find your way back. In my opinion this is not a lesson in why
not to anchor to a site but more a lesson in stupidity!

Naturally different environments call for different diving. If the currents
were that strong then you have to drift but then you need to have someone
topside to follow you! Certainly in a boat that is reliable enough to start
and with a radio or cell phone. Why doesn't own a cell phone? Bunch of
hicks? I know I've used my cell phone easily 7 miles out. This just sounds
like a bunch of morons not knowing what's going on.....

Okeechobee diver found alive after 19 hours at sea
By Debbie Robinson staff writer
April 1, 2002
An Okeechobee diver was rescued unharmed Sunday morning offshore from
the
Sebastian Inlet after being in the water for 19 hours.
Carlos Duarte, 41, was pulled from the water by a recreational boater
who
spotted the man about 10:30 a.m. about 15 miles offshore, said Coast
Guard
Petty Officer Dana Morrison.
"Surprisingly, he was in pretty good shape," Morrison said. "He was
pretty
sunburned and tired."
Indian River County paramedics examined Duarte, but the diver refused
any
further medical treatment, Morrison said.
Duarte could not be reached for comment Sunday evening.
His saga started early Saturday afternoon when Duarte and two friends
steered their boat through the Fort Pierce Inlet into the Atlantic
Ocean
for an afternoon of lobster diving, Morrison said.
They headed north to the Vero Beach area, where they dropped anchor
about
3:30 p.m. about seven miles offshore from the area of South Beach
Park at
East Causeway Boulevard, said Indian River County Fire Lt. Kevin
Slade.
"There was an extremely strong current, and he drifted away from the
boat
underwater," he said.
When Duarte surfaced, he was several miles away from the boat and
unable to
swim back, Slade said.
His two friends, who were not identified, couldn't contact the Coast
Guard
because the boat was not equipped with radio communications or
flares,
Morrison said.
"They had no radio, no flares and the boat wouldn't start," he said.
At dawn, the two men were able to get the attention of a passing
boat, and
the people on board contacted the Coast Guard, Morrison said.
An air and ground search was launched and Duarte was located in the
water
about 10:30 a.m. by another boater who brought the diver to shore at
the
Sebastian Inlet, he said.
Duarte had been battling strong currents and 3-foot waves, Morrison
said.
Duarte stayed afloat by pumping air from his tank into his vest,
Morrison
said.
Two Indian River County Fire Department rescue divers earlier had
entered
the water in the area where Duarte was diving, and the department's
marine
cutter also participated in the search, Slade said.
