Technical Diving Equipment Workshop: Yesterday (Sat 8th April) I attended the first of the Equipment Workshops being held by Martin Smith and Chris Hellas at Runnymeade, UK. It was a very interesting and informative day. Nitrox and Technical Diving courses only cover equipment briefly and concentrate upon oxygen clean and oxygen service. The Workshop gave us the opportunity to discuss the "real" needs of the Technical Diver and to try various equipment types and configurations in a non sales environment. Topics covered included: Cylinder and regulator configurations, Stage cylinder size, mounting and redundany. Buoyancy requirements, Wings, redundancy, harnesses and comfort. Reels for uplines and penetrations, Marker buoys and inflation systems. Instrumentation and Run time schedules, redundancy and slate management. Dive computers including the Cochrane Nemesis II and Air-x Nitrox. Laptop dive planning software. Suit materials, buoyancy and thermal considerations. Argon inflation systems. Torches and Batteries, redundancy, mounting, power and endurance. Fins including the much discussed (but seldom seen in the UK) Force Fins.
