Jeff,
It's an interesting thing that while you need cave diving certification to
enter most caves you don't need a wreck diving certification to dive on a
wreck. As you are finding out, getting a recommendation for a "wreck diving
instructor" is a hot debate. Which I can offer no recommendations for, so
good luck.
But I would like to recommend a few basic suggestions for rigging your
equipment, which should apply to any form of diving but is especially useful
on a wreck:
1.) No metal to metal connections - wrecks are entanglement hazards
you may need to cut yourself free.
2.) If you need a pony bottle, don't back mount it, rig it as a
stage bottle w/ cut-able connections. Back mounted bottles are prone to
snagging lines and can get fowled in wreckage.
3.) If you plan to do wreck penetrations make sure your instructor
can use a reel and teach you how to use a reel. Don't listen to anyone who
recommends the old "progressive penetration" technique, which can lead to
disaster in a silt out.
Maybe you can gauge an instructors skills on his opinions of what I have
listed above. What I have listed above is so basic, but may not be obvious
unless you've made the mistake of trying it the other way and then having
some one tell you a better way to do it.
Adam
