THE MAKING OF AN EXPEDITION
SUB-AQUATIC SURVIVOR 2002

magazine?

Here is your chance to find out.
Mission
• To conduct a cursory structural survey and photographic survey of a
deep water shipwreck of historical
importance
• To acquire a journalistic record of the team training and the conduct
of a technical expedition for deep
water diving projects
Objective
• A shipwreck of historical significance
• Sunk in 200 to 280 fsw of warm, tropical water near the Florida Keys
• Vessel identity and historical details will be revealed to surviving
expedition members and then in the
pages of Skin Diver magazine
Participants
• Potentially – YOU
• Skin Diver and the instructional team will select 18 qualified
candidates from a random lottery to
participate in this expedition
• Qualified divers must have 75 logged dives, advanced open water
certification, and basic Nitrox
certification or higher level certifications
• Applicants must submit a medical clearance and be fit for technical
diving as certified by a qualified health
care provider
• Participants must be prepared to accept the terms and conditions
dictated by Skin Diver for participation in
this expedition
• Participants must sign a release allowing use of their names, their
image in photographs published by the
magazine and the use of certain quotes solicited for publication
purposes.
Training and Conduct
• Expedition will take place in three phases
• Phase One – Four days of intensive training in Advanced Nitrox with
Decompression Procedures and
Extended Range diving at Forty Fathom Grotto in Ocala, Florida.
Successful candidates will receive
certification at the Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures
levels.
• Phase Two – Twelve divers selected from Phase One will move forward to
Phase Two training completing
Extended Range and Advanced TRIMIX. This training will be completed on
the deep wrecks of South
Florida in water depths between 150 and 300 fsw. Diving operations will
be based out of Ft. Lauderdale,
FL.
• Phase Three – Actual expedition dives completed by the six remaining
divers and conducted from – survive
to find out or stay home and read about it.
Selection Process
• At each phase of the operation, six divers will be eliminated,
survivor style, from the Expedition.
• Instructional staff will evaluate divers on the ability to complete
training, plan the dives, and on the quality
of their water skills.
• Diving participants will vote to remove members of the team based on
their evaluation of the team
member’s contribution, his or her ability to work as part of the team,
and ability to complete the dives in
question.
• Six of the original eighteen divers will be selected for the final
expedition.
Scheduling
• Welcome Reception and Orientation: March 14, 2002 at 6:00 PM at Forty
Fathom Grotto, Ocala, Florida
• Phase One training will be from March 15, 2002 to March 18, 2002.
• Phase Two training, for those who survive will be based in Ft.
Lauderdale, Florida and conducted over a
four-day weekend, April 11 thru 14. Support facility will be Southeast
Oceanic Services.
• Phase Three: Dates and locations to be announced. If, you survive.
Survivors should plan five business
days for the actual expedition.
Photography
• World-class photojournalist and technical diver Bret Gilliam will do
official underwater photography.
• Some survivors of the selection process may be assigned additional
photographic duties for the Expedition.
Primary Expedition Staff
• Group Leader Mike Ange. Experienced Advanced TRIMIX and Advanced Wreck
instructor trainer,
certified advanced diver medic, author of diving text and numerous
articles, and veteran of several
expedition dive projects including 2 to the U.S.S. Monitor National
historic site.
• Diving Safety Officer and Selection Process Supervisor, Joe Odom.
Experienced Advanced TRIMIX and
Advanced Wreck instructor trainer, author of numerous diving textbooks
and articles and a veteran of
several photographic expeditions focusing on large marine mammals and
sharks.
• Diving Safety Officer and Dive Site Supervisor, Mike Bourne. Advanced
TRIMIX and Advanced Wreck
instructor trainer and senior instructor trainer for Emergency Response
Diving.
Equipment
• Divers will require at Phase One: Extended Range diving equipment
which includes all regular diving gear,
twin cylinders, a dual bladder technical harness style BCD, two high
performance regulators, a wreck reel,
a decompression marker lift bag, a stage bottle of at least 40 cu. Ft.,
two cutting instruments (a knife,
suitable shears, or a Z-knife), a personal dive light, two dive timing
devices, two depth gauges suitable for
depths to 300 fsw, and one Nitrox cleaned decompression regulator.
• At Phase Two, divers will require an additional stage bottle and an
additional regulator for decompression
compatible with Nitrox mixtures up to 40%.
• Some equipment sponsorships from manufacturers are anticipated but
participants should expect to provide
some of their own equipment. Individuals entering the selection pool
will receive further details.
Cost
• Selected participants will incur a cost of $2500 for training, charter
fees, and certification fees.
• A deposit of $500.00 is required immediately upon acceptance of your
application
• Travel expenses and lodging at all sites are the responsibility of the
participant.
• Group hotel rates will be made available to the participants.
• Participants will pay for their gas fills at bulk rates.
• Meals and other incidental expenses are the responsibility of the
participant.
