Subject: Necklace for backup reg
JJ's book finally arrived end of last week (yaaaah, the delay wasn't quite
as long as I'd expected). I've been very busy with marking but have
managed to get through to around chapter 6. There have been a few surprise
to date.

One thing that the group may be able to clarify. On a number of pictures
the mouth peice from the backup reg is shown pointing away (out) from the
diver. Presumably as the diver swims along the mouth peice would point
forward (rather than the front of the reg/diaphragm). If this is
intentional the only way I can imagine it would be acheivable is to have
the bungie loop on the regulator side of the cable tie rather than on the
mouth peice side (as I presently have it and as it appears on other web
sites I've seen). I'm probably not explaining this well. The following
image from the WKPP site shows how I currently attach the necklace (except
I use bungie cord and have knots in each end of the cord to stop it coming
off easily, the bungie cord is less elastic).

In the alernate model the loose ends of the cord would point toward the
diver/mouth peice. The loop would be toward the second stage but would
obviously have to bend back round to loop round your neck. I could
envisage a few advantages:

1) Presumably in this position free flow would be unlikely as water flow
into the mouth peice would push the diaphragm out (and the valve closed).
Or at least the diaphragm would face down and back rather than forward.

2) May be easier to pickup with your mouth? Would obviously need to try this.

3) I find (particularly since I use bungie cord) that the mouth peice is
pulled out a bit by repeated donning and doffing, never come off altogether
mind but I am careful. Now and again I need to push it back into place.
Attaching the loop the other way round would obviously have the reverse
effect and eliminate the chance of pulling the mouth peice off
unintentionally.

Am I making a mountain out of mole hill (on the basis of one or two
pictures)? I can/will obviously experiment myself to see if this works but
would love to hear advice on this one.

Cheers,

Simon
