The figure eight knot I'm familiar with is not, to the best of my
recollection, used to attach things to other things. It's used to increase
the diameter of a line so that it will not pass through a snug fitting
space. This suggests either than I am underestimating what the knot can do
or that we're not thinking of the same knot. Can you point to a picture of
one somewhere on the internet or, if you have a digital camera, take a photo
of one?
