Aldo, I am confused. If trawlers fish outside of 5km, why am I swimming near fish trawler gill nets all the time when I dive on wrecks in the New England that are within a mile of the shore? We always have to be extremely careful on wrecks in our area because we can swim into trawler nets that are attached to the wrecks. I might add that gill netting cost the life of a local diver last year in our area. I also add that gill net does damage to the wrecks. Finally, we call trawler captains in this area as they know where all the wrecks are because they have swept the area with their nets and snagged wrecks. The problem is UNESCO is relying on limited data (i.e. spear fishing in the Med) and is making a sweeping judgement on all wreck diving. It is a mistake. To use that line of thinking maybe we should disallow the Japanese and Russian trawlers from sweeping the sea clear of fish off our US coastal waters. Or maybe the UN can get it's act together and stop the Japanese from harvesting whales. A joke is funny until it becomes law.
