You know, I was kind of thinking you had a point, until that statement. I disagree with it. Tell me, though. The Hunley was missing for over 100 years. It was recovered by private investors (Clive Cussler, IIRC) and its recovery is bringing knowledge of history (the model they have in Charleston, SC is wrong in many ways) to folks.
