I don't know about shark feedings but recently a 5 foot bull came right up to the back of our boat soon after we hooked into a wreck off Wilmington, North Carolina. A big baracuda was there too, but that's common. People fish there and the cudas try to steal fish being pulled in. It was unusual to see the bull evidently trying to pull the same stunt. We were gearing up and the bull passed within a foot of the back of the legs of one of the divers in the water waiting for us. I said, "Hey, watch out for that shark behind you." He said, "Yeah, right. I'm not falling for that." We convinced him we were not kidding and he turned around and put his mask in the water to get a better look. The bull circled the wreck the whole dive but was never agressive and didn't follow us back up. A larger sand tiger also circled the wreck the whole dive but he never came up to the surface. This was a recreational dive in about 70 fsw on a wreck. It's a popular site for grouper spearfishing, so I suspect the bull has gotten used to stealing grouper from spear fishers. > > So the feedings get them used to humans=food and they become more agressive, > right? Then where are the Bulls getting fed to learn this behavior? "Hurry, > hurry, hurry! Step right up and sign up for the bull shark feeding dives! > (payment in advance please)". Hmmmmm... I doubt it. Maybe they get to > talking with the reef sharks at the bar after work and learn it there. > Bull: "No shit, they just sit on the bottom and one of 'em feeds everyone?" > Reefy: "I kid you not (sir)" > Bull: "So how much do they feed ya?" > Reefy: "They got a little bucket full of fish." > Bull: "Doesn't sound like much." > Reefy: "Yeah, but ya don't hafta work for it." > Bull: "So what happens when they run out and you're still hungry?" > Reefy: "Well, we just swim off and look for something slow enough to catch > like always." > Bull: (pause) "Riiight..." > C. > > Chris Elmore > PalmettoSoft Technologies Corp. > (803) 233-2001 (work) > (803) 348-3055 (mobile) -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
