>Television evangelists Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, two of the most >prominent voices of the religious right, said liberal civil liberties >groups, feminists, homosexuals and abortion rights supporters bear >partial responsibility for Tuesday's terrorist attacks because their >actions have turned God's anger against America. I suggest rather that people like Falwell and Robertson who use lies, distortions of truth, and fear tactics to terrorize people into sending them money and supporting their distorted agendas are nothing more than domestic terrorists and should be included on the government's hit list when we go to war. >I happen to be an ordained deacon in one of the better known Protestant >sects. I also did a minor in comparative religion in college. I am >extremely familiar with the teachings of Msrs. Falwell et alia. >Obviously he does not advocate mass murder. I would disagree that Falwell and Robertson do not advocare mass murder. A gay, lesbian, or bisexual (GLB) teenager commits suicide in the USA every 6 hours. That equates to roughly 1500 dead GLB kids each year. We know this happens and why. Falwell and Robertson know this happens and why (and aggressively fund anti-gay agendas that contribute to it). George Bush Sr. knows this happens and why when in 1976 he attempted to suppress a Federal study (that he commissioned) on teenage suicide which included a chapter on gay teenage suicide. He was under pressure from conservative fundamentalist religious groups to do so. The study pointed its finger squarely at the schools, churches, and government for knowing permitting and in most cases actively supporting an environment filled with prejudice and hate towards GLB people. 1500 kids that kill themselves for reasons directly tied to religious prejudice is mass murder, absurd, and a condemnation of society as a whole for allowing it to continue. Case in point, three months ago a group of GLB high-school students visited a Florida state legislator (Alex Travollian) as part of a safe-school campaign (for ALL students) and he told them they deserved the hate and prejudice they receive and that God will destroy them as well for their sins. I'm also very familiar with religious scripture and I also happen to be gay. Mark Brinkman on the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania was also openly gay (one of the three passengers suspected to have fought back against the terrorists). The co-pilot for the plane that hit the Pentagon was openly gay. Many other gay people died alongside everyone else in these attacks; however, we will not forget that domestic terrorism and violence occurs every day in the US against us. 'And we do support the US in doing WHATEVER is necessary for ending terrorism; the kind we saw on tuesday and also the kind I and GLB kids see every day. I was in the middle east during the Iran hostage crisis and ensuing conflict. Where? You will never know, but I would go again in a second for this cause, except for the US ban on gays in the military. Another stupid form of ignorance easily traced to religious prejudice.
