What on earth is wrong with trying to make a living? I suppose that all the
instructors should give their time for free, and live off of unemployment
benefit. As for having to pay for O2 cleaning of regs cylinders etc.. for
the most part it is these same people who are going to be filling, and
mixing the gases and hence take the risk of fire and explosions. I suppose
you resent the fact that you have to get your cylinder tested as well every
2-4 years.

"I object to paying 100 quid for a Basic Nitrox course, and come away
knowingthat I could have learnt that much with an afternoon's reading!
Particularlywhen I am told that I can't do the Advanced course until I have
done thebasic one."

The same goes for learning to dive. You can read it all up in a book go out
in the water one fine sunny day with all your brand new equipment and end
up killing yourself. So I assume you don't agree with people having to pay
to learn to dive either.

""""I look forward to when BS-AC and SAA start running Nitrox courses.
Hopefullythe fees will come down to something reasonable.
For example, a BS-AC O2 course costs about half that of a Basic Nitrox one,
and contains about twice the theory!""""""

If it wasn't for these other agencies spending the time and money
developing the course and materials do you think the BSAC would have
endorsed NOx. As for how much the course costs, and when it becomes
available I think we will have to wait and see. As the BSAC is in a bit of
a financial trouble a the moment I dont think they will be giving them away
either.

I have worked full and part time as a diving instructor teaching both PADI
and BSAC. What really annoys me is people who expect you to spend the time
and money becoming a well trained instructor and then bitch about having
to then pay for diving instruction. If you want to learn things from books
fine, if you want to sit by the side of a pool and be taught by someone
with no formal teacher training fine. If you want professional instruction
catered to your needs and time schedule you will have to cough up. If you
don't like the system then why not start your own. Once you have put the
work into it see how quick you are to start giving away your time.
