We've had many things sound pretty good at first and not pan out.  However, 
some of the stuff actually works.

That isn't a reflection of how I fin.

A much closer analogy would be sculling the boat with a single oar from the 
stern.  In that case, a vented flexible blade and a shaft with a bit of flex 
may indeed be more efficient.

The problem with that setup is the need for a different rigidity for 
different loading in the boat.  I would imagine that there would be a change 
needed for different speeds as well.

Absolutely.  Since I'm not taking the plunge until the entanglement issue is 
solved, I'm firmly parked in my ringside seat for the time being.
