Karla,
As long as the training agencies advocate deep air the bad instructors
will use that fact as justification for teaching it. The insideousness of
narcosis and hypothermia are probably more dangerous than any equipment
failure for a trained diver. Below is a review of the major technical
agency's policies on air at depth. If anyone thinks they can bring a logical
argument for breathing air at 165'-180' I'm sure we'd all like to hear it;
otherwise, contact these agencies and ask them to revise their standards to
130' max EAD.

ANDI- http://www.andihq.com/ANDIHQ/train.htm
     Extended-Range Exploration Diver....................165' "Recommended",
however, "option to extend to 190 ... for the practical application of
narcosis management as well as an evaluation of personal limits."

DSAT (PADI Tech) http://www.padi.com/courses/tecrec/TecDeepDiver.asp
     DSAT Tec Deep Diver.....................165 feet

IANTD- http://209.203.202.229/index1.html
     Deep Diver...............130 fsw
(This suprised me. With whatever other faults IANTD may have they should be
commended for adopting a decent depth for air/nitrox)

NAUITEC- http://www.nauitec.com
     Extended Range Diver Course...................180'
(they do "Strongly recommend" that helium be used "where availible" for
training dives in excess of 150')

TDI- http://www.tdisdi.com/
     Extended Range..........................180'
(TDI ads the ludicrous statement, "This course provides the training and
experience required to competently utilize air for dives up to 180 fsw...".
Interestingly, for trimix dive training the phrase, "and safely" is added
after "competently". Maybe they realize that air at 180' isn't safe but it
doesn't seem to affect their desire to sell it.)

And just for comparison...
GUE- http://www.gue.com/classroom/standards/gue_tech1_student.pdf
     Tech 1.............."equivalent narcotic depth" 100 +/- 30' (maximum
dive depth 130')
