Ed,

When you say backup second on the left, I guess you mean either a
lefthanded/ambidextrous second stage or an AIR2.

Neither is a great idea.

None of the ambidextrous regulators are very reliable.

Back in the dark ages when I got certified OW, it was through SSI at a
ScubaPro dealer.  As a consequence, I was trained with an AIR2 since that
was what was on all the rental gear.

Those things are great when everything is sunshine and smiles or when just a
thing or two is going wrong.

When the problems start to multiply, they aren't so good.

In a full-blown, feces-impacting-the-impeller CF, the AIR2 can be a
signifigant liability.

Trying to make something be an inflator and a second stage means both
functions lose a bit.
