Dear Ed, One way or another you found your way to the palace of wisdom without realizing that you'll learn more with open eyes and still fingers. From the critique you posted, it's obvious that you have taken no time to learn anything first hand about DIR. Try going to http://www.wkpp.org, or get <Doing It Right II> to see what Trey et al do. Go to http://www.gue.com and subscribe to <Quest> magazine and maybe take a course. Investigate the last time Tom Mount made a successful three mile plus cave penetration at a depth of more than 300'. Trace the development of DIR from Parker Turner and William Main's gear configuration to the present DIR system taught by GUE. Investigate the survival statistics of DIR divers versus other tech divers. Try to keep in mind that Trey has no financial interest in GUE and that his only possible interest in your doing it right is so that you won't add another death to the statistics and cause more enthusiasm for government regulation of tech diving. There's a lot of good literature on DIR, look for it. At the very least you could talk to a DIR diver about DIR and not get all your information from people who know nothing about DIR. I myself just do weenie rec dives and haven't fully adopted the DIR philosophy, but that doesn't preclude my ability to distinguish between the real deal and crap, and, yes, I do have tech certs from other agencies. This list may have saved my life by warning me away from the Buddy Inspiration and teaching me the best position in the water for off gassing. Stick around and if you can bring yourself to read more and type less, the list may save your life too. DPTNST, John .. -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
