Mathias, you just notice it better when it is fast, as you would notice the buzz if you dropped deep on air real fast. If you go slowly, the higher order brain functions will tell you you are OK. The impairment is there, but the recognition may not be. We found out about the speed the way Manos did in deco switches to gas without helium ( we now use helium ) and we found the impairment when we traveled one direction on a narcotic gas, like nitrox, and then went to helium, but when we came back the other way, we noticed mistakes in our bottle placement like they were not turned off, or not clipped off, or the regs were hanging loose, and the most frequent screwup ? We dropped them way deeper than they were supposed to be breathed, adding to the screwups. JJ and I actually thought somebody had fucked with our bottles until we got shallow enough to think clearly and realize it was the gas. This ended the nitrox bullshit a long time ago. Somebody needs to break the news to IANTD now. -----Original Message----- From: Matthias Voss [mailto:mat.voss@t-*.de*] Sent: Wednesday, July 04, 2001 1:50 AM To: Manos Manoli Cc: Tech Diver Subject: Re: 33m Narcosis Manos, Trey is absolutely right with his tip. When switching, you switched from 42 % Nitrigen to 64%. It is not the absolute EAD which narced you , but the sudden change of it. You can get narced in about the same way when to hit the depth on air, say go down in half a minute to 35 m. So the less difference in pN2 after , the less narcosis.
