Brad,

Recently I was talking to someone who was planning on taking an NSS Intro-To-Cave course (which I believe is very similar to the NACD intro course) in the near future. Their comment basically was that they thought that the GUE Cave 1 course was too challenging for them. Having taken the GUE Cave 1 course myself last September, I was somewhat perplexed by this statement. Although I feel like I received very good training during the GUE cave course, knowing what I know now, I definitely would not want to try cave diving with any less training either in quality or quantity. The caves that you dive in are the same and are just as challenging and potentially dangerous whether you take a GUE course or a "less challenging" course. So don't fool yourself. Get the best cave diver training available or don't do it at all.

I'm not sure where to find the exact statistics, but I believe I read somewhere that the number of active cave divers versus the number of certified cave divers is fairly low. I don't know this for a fact, but I believe that this is in part due to the fact that many people soon find out that it can be very challenging diving and that they have really not received adequate training to be comfortable and confident cave divers.

Best regards,

Bob

At 08:13 PM 6/16/2001 -0500, you wrote:

Hello all-
I am wanting to learn the right way to do cave dives. This is obviously going to be GUE, but I don't think I am ready for GUE yet, as I have no other cave/cavern training. I have been thinking about doing the NACD courses to help prepare me for the GUE courses, but wanted to get the general concensus as to how well put together the NACD course really is. Thanks in advance for any advice I can get!!

Brad

-- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
