Scott, Nothing new-fangled about it. There are hundreds in use; take a look around. As far as turning on a valve with one partially installed, I do it frequently to control (and quiet) the bleeding down of partially-full cylinders. I wouldn't recommend screwing it in for "only a thread or two", but backing it "out" a thread or two and then opening the valve is no problem. And the scenario of a dive shop monkey using a 48" pipe wrench to unscrew one WITH THE VALVE STILL TURNED ON is too damned funny. That would be sort of like unscrewing the VALVE from a "full" cylinder. If that's what you're worried about I'd find a new dive shop. Geez! If you need further instructions see my other post.
