These are good ideas. May I suggest to take it a little further? Why not use black paint, stain or ink instead of a Magic Marker? Dipping the end of the 2x4 into a paint bucket will give you a more even band for the mark, at 2"-3" in length, and absorbed throughout the line. Whereas a Magic Marker 'mark' is much smaller in size (to see) and may not cover all around the line, where you may see it on one side of the line, but not the other.
