If the packs are closed then why not use them until they fail ? Why worry if the alternative is to store them idle in the basement or something ? It is correct however that for a long service life you should charge each NiCd cell separately. >How can I check the internal resistance of the Renewal Batteries? e) Put a 1 ohms resistor over the terminals of one and see what happens to the voltage of the cell. In general for any R: V_loaded = V_unloaded I_discharge * R_internal. Measure the Vs, calculate I_discharge (= V_loaded/R_resistor) and solve for R_internal. A 1/4 Watts resistor will burn up about instantly when you do this so do get a beefy one. Anything from 1 ohms and down to 0.30 can be used *if* the alkaline can take it. Alkalines typically measure in at 0.3 Ohms per cell. I.e at 5 amps they output about *no* voltage. NiCads measure in at 0.03 and will provide 5 without batting an eye. I stand by my initial offer but would prefer to get in direct contact just to nail down any remaining or future issues. john 015
