Trey:

I started this thread after I went to my local dive shop, and in talking =
I mentioned that I was going to get a DUI 400 gram Thinsulate suit. I =
told them I was disappointed in the dry suit undergarment they had sold =
me when I started diving. On the other hand, it looked like it would be =
impossible to get a decent fit out of the box with the DUI. They said =
that they could contact their supplier, Andy's, about making me a custom =
undergarment with 400 gram Thinsulate, just like the DUI. From past =
experience, I knew that they probably had no idea about what they were =
talking about -- on the other hand, neither did I. But, it wouldn't =
cost me anything to find out what they had to offer.

To me, if it was the same suit and it had a better fit, it didn't matter =
what the label was. But, I was going to make sure that it was the same =
suit, and the only way to do so was by finding out what made the DUI =
what it was.

I found out from 3M and DUI that there were different kinds of =
Thinsulate, with Type B (for footwear) being the one for diving because =
it was least compressible. As DUI pointed out, other divewear =
manufacturers used less expensive lofted Thinsulate that is for =
above-water use, just so that they could have the Thinsulate label. I =
posted this information because I thought others might find it useful. =
And, as long as I had gotten this far, I was curious to read the NEDU =
test report.

After I told the dive shop that duplicating the DUI suit would involve =
using the Type B Thinsulate, they got back to me saying that there was =
no way they could get such a suit made for a price close to the DUI one. =
But, now they know a little more about their suppliers and dive gear, =
and in the long run this may help get better and safer equipment =
available up here -- they have picked up on other things I have =
requested.

Thanks for relating your experience along with information about what =
you use and how to use it -- this has been invaluable to me in a place =
where no one can say DIR let alone knows what it is.

Alex

I never "demanded" proof from Bill Gavin when he told me where and =
how they tested things, I merely looked over at him in the water and =
noted what he was using - proof enough. Having had access to all kinds =
of information from all kinds of sources does not mean they handed me =
over the papers to go with it, and I personally think it is good enough =
that I share it in a form that does not give up those people and =
organizations that let me in on it.=20

Kane just got into an argument with some moron about red cell rigidity =
under nitrogen tension, and the guy want me to "prove" that it happens =
while he in no way intends to "prove" to me that it does NOT happen, or =
that his recommendation for air diving is in fact a "proven" safe thing =
long term.

Where does it end? This is like the lawyers who do traffic tickets =
wanting to check the certification of the radar user or the calibration =
of his radar gun.
