When I pack sofnolime (812 Grade D -- small grain size), I don't try to
compress it, but I spend a great deal of time tapping the canister on the
floor to help the material settle. The first time I seal the canister, I
bang it around for a few minutes then open it up again to find that it has
settled even more. I top-it off, tap it some more, then seal it up for
good. No problems with channeling (I'm getting about 2-3 more hours than
the stuff is rated for).

I notice a slight "stale" taste to the gas about 2 hours before the
scrubber is used up. The next symptom is slight breathlessness only after
heavy exertion. Slowly the "staleness" and "breathlessness" increase
until I feel slightly breathless even at rest. Bear in mind...these
symptoms only start to occur about 1-2 hours AFTER the rated life of the
scrubber. I am pleased that there is a comfortable (1-2 hour) margin for
error between first symptoms and end of scrubber life.

As for re-using the scrubber, it depends on the dive. I try to make sure
I have at least 1-2 hours of scrubber life beyond the planned duration of
the dive, and I'm reluctant to do a serious decompression dive with
anything besides fresh scrubber.

Hope that helps...

Aloha,
Rich
