Chris,
You can melt the lead in a cast iron pot on a Coleman stove.

For protection just a set of welders gloves and a full face
shield that you would use
in a machine shop. I have not built any 'V' weights but we
use this to smelt down
used wheel weight  lead for a 50caliber elephant gun we take
to the range every now and then.
