Bill, actually , in tender loving caring for racing cars and motorcycles engines, sandblasting is done to improve reliability and performance. Actually it is not sand, but very specific ball-like shaped metal particles or other. First a surface is made even , polished, then blasted. The effect on the microstructure is comparable do forging. You know how forged stuff withholds mechanical stresses better. Before you make a steel brittle, look at its composition and processing, and study wether it is prone to brittling by sandblasting. This process in Germany could not be done without ok from the BAM ( highest rank state institution for verifying and investigating materials and products.) They will put new tanks under cyling stresses in magnitudes of 80.000 cycles ( in this case, valves) Matthias Bill Bott schrieb: > > That has to be about the all time stupidest thing I have ever heard.
