Hi Doug,
        also in Italy the DIN fitting is becoming more popular, divers
understood its greater security but manufacturers seem not of the same
opinion; infact, whithout few exceptions, all regulators are sold with
International (A clamp is the same?) fitting.
I don't understand your problem with hired cylinders: I use an hexagonal
spanner (I don't know the exact english word for it) and the screw out
adaptor is easily removed.
 I agree, a ribbed rubber collar could be a good idea.
