Well Padi is an organization that sets guidelines for scuba instruction. It issues cards to divers based on the comments of the instructors., who became instructors based on another's comments. There are how many instructors? You men seem to know first hand of people being given cards without being able to perform the skills. Did you bother to send a complaint to Padi that it happened, preferably with the instructors name. I would guess not. It is always easier to throw rocks. Padi sets the parameters for the diver education, based on what they feel is the best for the general public. Not the obese or out of shape , nor the triathlon contestants, the general public. Most are happy in the top 100 foot of the water column, most even shallower. I personally have seen a dozen students fail to get their open water certification on the first dives. I have seen students told to go practice swimming until you can meet the basic requirements. I have overheard fathers try to get cards for their children by offering contributions to the instructor. And these fathers were divers. The point is, the instructor FAILED them, did not certify them. A Padi instructor fancy that. The difference between you and me, I wrote a letter of commendation to Padi about the instructor. Padi does not have a police force. They will however respond to complaints. So will the other certifying agencies. It is up to us the diving public to police our own. In his own way, Trey is part of the police force. He is constantly pointing out the flaws and errors in the current education process. Ten years ago, he was probably stroke diving himself. He progressed from there. Does he let garbage go unchallenged on the forum. No he, tells it like it is. You may not appreciate his gruff delivery, but you had best respect his knowledge and experience. My certification was with dual hoses, horseshoe collars and J valves. The criteria was if you have the nerve to do it, you are in. I recently had my two boys go thru the certification process. I used Padi and the aforementioned instructor. I have always felt, it is my life I am talking about. If I take a short cut in learning this or setting this up, who will help me at 200 feet under? It tends to make you hone your skills. That is unless you have a death wish. Quite frankly, you and I and all the divers, owe it to the neophyte divers to complaint to Padi or any other agency about abuses., backed up with facts. Not hearsay or there say...facts. Until the diving public adopts that attitude, we will have abuses, but they will be our fault. We will have deaths and even those will be partially our fault. Silence can be deadly. Facts make change, not excess verbiage. I have written more than I intended, to all, I enjoy the commentaries, even when I don't agree with them. To Al Marve, nice meeting you. To the rest of the group, thanks for the info, you may have saved my life.
