Thanks a lot , George, >but the Cubans hand line their fish with a thing that looks >like a > wheel without a tire, with one rim lower than the other. It >winds on a > convenient armslength of line per stroke, That's convenient to measure the length. and it lets the line off as fast > as you can shoot it like an open faced spinning reel would. Yes, I can see that spinning and going down precisely on spot. But, what about the hub of it ? Is it hand held or attached to the boat ? >Grouper ball is Yes, we have the same size of weight, iron bricks with a bar to attach line to. The method we used in the mediterranean, depth to 65m, currents to 1 knot, was a handy ( 8-10 mm) line wound up onto a big ( say 30- 50l oblong plastic canister, weight attached. This was simply thrown over board in the wreck position, and unreeling real fast, hitting ground with a 10m target precision. Formerly they had the line coiled up in a box, one diver threw it over, and jumped after, following the line, and attached it at the appropriate place, mostl at 35m near a runway. Nice when someone had left something personal in the line box... Divers then let out upstream, drifting in to the line. Deco took place at the line, but in strong current the buoy sometimes got dragged below surface. No big problem, but a chase rib was only for emergency, Pls. what does it mean "hooking a wreck"? Long weighted line reaching near bottom, trieng to get stuck into the wreck while drifting ? You get the tunas by sounding, are they accompanied by dolphin schools as well ? regards Matthias -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
