For diving with the single aluminum tank go with the stainless backplate and the smaller wings. You will only need the larger wings if you have need for the additional lift, otherwise it's a waste and it's not efficient. Check with the manufacturer of the wings and they will recommend the proper lift for your intended purpose.(Halcyon??) If you plan on getting steel doubles (who wouldn't?) you will not want the stainless backplate due to the added weight. Go with an aluminum backplate here. Aluminum plates can be used for both rigs, it's just that the rig with the aluminum backplate and aluminum 80cf will need a bit more weight added when diving. I have both rigs and only use the stainless plate for openwater with single tanks. This time of year I wear the dreaded 7mil wetsuit. & carry 25 lbs of weight. I use standard 80 aluminum tanks, (single) at this time. My question is: Stainless steel or aluminum backplate & the 27 or 36 lb Halcyon Pioneer Wing. Single tank for now until I get the doubles then will go for the Explorer wing & SS plate.
