Only a few weeks ago I've experienced a situation where I
really needed a good signalling device:

Site: Akumal, Mexico
Wind: moderate breeze
Water: 29C, waves approx. 3ft, moderate current
Divers: my girlfriend, the DM and myself
Boat: open, 18ft, crew: 2

Upon surfacing from the dive, the boat was nowhere in sight. On
previous dives, the crew always followed our bubbles very cautiously.
This time, probably due to the waves, they didn't :-(

It took us a while to spot the boat, again, due to the waves. Then
we tried our whistles (attached to the inflator hose), not good
enough. Visions of 3 divers floating to Cuba began to appear :-)

DM Jose Antonio, a very good DM from Mike Maddens Cedam Dive center
Aventuras Akumal, had the following solution:

take the first stage of the valve, open the valve holding the
outlet just below the surface. This produces a lot of noice
and a nice fountain of water. Enough to attract the crew's
	attention.

So whenever you don't have a Dive Alert horn (might be a good solution,
but $75 is a lot of money), this might do the trick.

BTW, someone mentioned flares. Besides the obvious problem of keeping
them dry (lots of problems, even when sailing), has anyone had problems
bringing them on holidays ? I know most airport regulations forbid
fireworks or explosives of anykind. I could imagine airport security
not being very happy if you bring your flares.
Obviously, I wouldn't put them in my carry-on luggage, but even then ?.
