Greg,
There are several difficulties trying to deco to the surface on 36%
Nitrox (vs. 50% O2), if you lose your O2: first, just from a practical
standpoint, you need too much gas -- if you run a conventional
Haldanian/Buhlman deco program, inc. a good one, like GUE Deco Planner, your
20' and 10' stops on EAN36 will be excessively long (remember, Manos was
inquiring about a sub-200' dive) and you probably won't have the gas
required; but even if you do, the QUALITY of decompression is poor ~ think of
it as trying to deco from 110' to the surface on 64% Nitrogen!! If you're
lucky, you might get away with it (not get bent) -- but 50% O2 is much more
effective from 70' all the way up... why risk using an inferior deco gas
(36%)?
I used to do EAN36, because that's how I was originally taught ( ----->
lots to unlearn); but since switching to 50% O2, I feel MUCH better, both
during and after the dive ~ less fatigue, more alert (I think George
mentioned tiredness as a typical sub-clinical result of high N2 loads...).
Perhaps in the last analysis, the best summary I've heard is a quote
attributed to Dr. Bill Hamilton: "What works, works..." ~ and 50% O2 is
what works.
Hope this clarifies,
Nelson Perry
