OR...After the deaths start piling up, the bereaved mothers of dead 18 and
19 year olds get together and form Mothers Against Deep Diving. This
organization files class action law suits against dive training agencies and
also lobbies at the state and federal level for legislation to "prevent
these senseless tragedies from taking more lives". Before you know it, we
have government regulation of the industry. I could see it now. Maximum
depth limits (right around 60'), mandatory inspections of dive gear by inept
government employees, licenses, and of course all overhead diving will be
COMPLETELY illegal. In no time at all we'd be legislated into pool diving
only.
Although I am a firm believer in darwinism, I fear the tendency for the
government to want to protect me from myself. Any increase in "technical"
diving deaths will be bad for everyone in the sport. While the examples
above are extreme, it's hard to say what a bunch of do-gooders could achieve
against a small niche group like technical divers if they really wanted to
legislate us out of our hobby. Ever notice the references George makes to
cave diving becoming illegal?
He knows. No more deaths is the answer, if we all want to continue diving.
