Subject: RE: DIR clarification
Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2000 10:54:56 -0500
Just an historical note - Bill Gavin named his style "Hogarthian" after his
friend and dive partner Bill "Hogarth" Main. Main is a prison guard in
Alachau, used to be a State Trooper ( I hate those guys, but they usually
can't catch me ), and Gavin is an engineer who designs gear for the US Navy
, including the MK19 rebreather and the secret vehicles. He used to love to
kid Main about being a cop while he was an engineer. Anyway, Main "retired"
from our from of diving in 1987, Gavin in 1996. Neither of them envisioned
or particularly were interested in the dives we do now, although Bill Gavin
designed our first scooter and advises me on that stuff, and he designed
most of our newer rebreathers, and advises me on that.

I met JJ in 1990 and he and I immediately saw that if either of us was going
to do what we really wanted to do, that we had found the right guy to do it
with. The two of us have a drive and desire that nobody else can understand,
and our gear system reelects that. We have not only put a lot of thought
into this, we have done the diving to back it up. Nobody else in this world
can say that.

George,
Thank you for the clarification; DIR is what I'm trying to learn and
use.
As you said, it's a unified system which easily applies to all types of
diving -- for cold water wrecks, only a liftbag needs to be added and a
heavier-line reel to use with mitts. It is a much better system than what I
used to do. I realize DIR is equally about diver attitude, team ethics and
discipline, which are crucial to safe diving.
The Techdiver and Cavers Lists are valuable resources for anyone with an
open mind.

(PS for Todd Leonard: you are right, SS clips are the ONLY way to go, esp.
in
salt water!)
