Hi Christian,

These rings are standard practice (at least around here). We make the rings
with ordinary snow shovels (not a plow) and then shovel lines from the
out-most circle all the way to the triangular hole we cut in the ice. The
lines look like the spokes on a tire. The thinking is that if you become
detached from the rope, AND the safety diver doesn't come rescue you, that
you can find your way back to the hole by following the "spokes". Also, the
out-most circle should extend 50 feet past the length of your tether.

It's amazing how well this works. Also, non-ice divers would be amazed at
the amount of light that comes through the ice - even when it's covered with
a lot of snow.

As much as I like ice diving, I'm glad (actually jealous) that the Canadian
got some warm weather diving in Australia with you before returning.

Many years ago now we had a Canadian, on secondment to Australia, become
a member of our small, private, intensely independent Dive Club.

Just before he returned to Canada he wrote an article about ice diving
there.

One of their techniques was to use a small snow plow to create
concentric rings of snow-free ice around the hole, roughly every 10
metres (33ft) with the ploughed up snow discarded to the side _away
from_ the hole. Divers looking up could see the extra light and,
especially the darker side with double the snow.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Mind, I have absolutely no idea how well
this would work in practice.

Christian
