That sounds like a very reasonable way to do it.

There's plenty of frozen lakes around here (Alaska) in winter but I've never
gotten in to ice diving because the ocean stays ice free for the most part
and why fuss around cutting holes in lakes when you can go dive off the
beach and catch king crab and scallops?

But that sounds like the way to do it.  I think I would just take the backup
anchor off my boat and throw it in the back of the truck and use that as the
drop line and leave the dry end tied off to my hitch.  I think it's 9/16"
braided nylon.  But maybe you guys are talking about lakes that you can't
just drive out on.

What is the purpose of the javex jug [what is a javex jug?] Is this a float?
To keep the line taut?
