HID lightheads seem to be pretty much a generic product these days. I think Sartek was the first to put the little Welch Allyn ballast right on the lighthead itself, but everyone in the industry copies everyone else, and they all use the same guts so it boils down now to just minor differences in how they make the body. DiveRite was doing it differently, putting the ballasts in the canister instead of on the lighthead, which everyone else said wouldn't work and Dive Rite insisted did - then all of a sudden there were the ballasts up on the lighthead like everyone else's. The big news now is that Welch Alyn has just come out with a new, smaller, cheaper, easier-to-build-a-case-for 10w bulb/ballast combo which should mean significantly cheaper (though less powerful) HID lights. Dive Rite already is showing one on their web page. These have tiny MR11 reflector bulbs, so they probably won't catch on with cavers, but there's supposed to be a bare bulb version that would be adaptable to a test tube lighthead. The really nice thing about these lights is you can use a much smaller canister, and still get as much or more light. A little 6 or 7 Ah canister will power the 18 HID head for 3-4 hours, and the little 10W for just about ever. >In a message dated 10/12/2000 5:03:59 PM US Mountain Standard Time, >jacs@gn*.co*.uk* writes: >Just picked this link of another group.
