All, I have been prodding George to get a book out for some time and though I'm sure he will assume a role as a contributor more than an author he has certainly been a major influence in bringing this to fruition. I think it will be valuable as a stand alone reference and guide to developing an intelligent working philosophy and conceptual framework from which to approach technical diving. It is easy to learn "how to make" a deep mix dive or a cave penetration, but it is another matter to know how to realistically evaluate, control, and keep track of your actual status. Many young and new tech divers are not really qualified to realistically determine if a dive is within their envelope or not or to recognize when they have exited that envelope during a dive because they were never taught or shown how to think about diving - only how to "do it" ! There should be a big section in every diving text and course entitled "evaluating and controlling your status" . This book will certainly not make a seasoned diver of anyone and there will be much disagreement on specifics throughout the community, but, taken as a complete work, I am confident that it will go along way towards teaching both new and used extended range divers how to "think" and what you should be thinking about, and THIS is what keeps you alive. I suggest to anyone who gets one of these that you stand back from the trees now and then and contemplate the forest. Rather than being a guy or gal who "goes diving, you just may become a "diver". I look forward to learning much from it and I hope George or somebody in the circle will mark a copy for me. Chuck -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
