Chris, the real problem is that these guys get fed crap by IANTD and TDI that we not only know better than, but in our own organizations, (* WKPP and *GUE) we don't ALLOW. Think about that : these guys are getting taught and told things that we have found to be so stupid , so dangerous and so far off base that we DON'T ALLOW THEM. The they get told by those instructors that I am an idiot, that WKPP is some bullshit to be avoided, and that DIR is all wrong. All I have to say is, what the has anyone from IANTD or TDI ever done in diving that compares to what we do every week of our lives ? It is no surprise that some student from Texas , fresh out of Idiocy School, or this other rec scuba neophyte, come screaming out ofter me armed with baloney that they were told , and that have no idea what the truth is. The truth is that IANTD has had to be hit in the head with a continuous two by four to even get near modern tech diving, TDI has had to be sued severely ( IANTD also )before they even came off of the REALLY stupid shit, and the rest are just struggling trying to make a commercial venture out of a sport that does not really lend itself to money making where any quality is applied. Just look at the quickie rebreather training that geos on. I got lucky - my four instructors were 1) my fathers boat captain, 2) Vaugh Kerkorian who has an MBA and runs a division of World Savings where I get my mortgages , Alton Hall - one of my father's lawyers, and Parker Turner who owned oil wells. Since I handled his money, I know full well that the last thing he needed was to teach diving. Parker and the WKPP taught me cave over a nine month period and then Gavin took over. Luckily, there are not for profit organizations like GUE, and non profits like WKPP that teach people and progress them along over time with continuous access to real information, knowledge, and a chance to practice skills with peers and seasoned players. Many other out ther have set up similar organiztions to do the same all over the US and the World. Diving for dollars is what is driving the bullshit out there, and the concomittant horror story results. Sooner or later the idots will get sued so many times that they will lose their insurance, and in the end the sport will look like the WKPP model everywhere, and quite frankly the faster that happens the better it is for all of us. Paul, Does rec.audio have a list of 80+ that died because some salesman told them a piece of crap amplifier was the thing to have? This list isn't rec.anything... the stakes are higher here and sometimes we have to play Wak-A-Mole with the idiots. C. I could go on. Of course I'm continually amazed how many jerks this sport attracts. I'm not worried about the tone, so long as it doesn't interfere with getting info. I think it often does. Cheers.
