My two cents to the list on the colour coding thing. I'm sure this is in the archives somewhere but the whole colour (we spell it right!) coding thing for different deco mixes pretty much becomes useless for most of the visible spectrum beyond a few metres and is totally useless in a siltout or total light failure. Sure you might be able to distinguish between black, yellow and blue reasonably easily but the rest of your regs become greenish brown. I've just skimmed through this thread so hope I'm not jumping in half cocked. I agree with the points you make. However I use a yellow primary (on the long hose) for the following reasons: 1. There's no reason not to (I had yellow diaphragm covers lying around) and can't see any particular disadvantage. I use the same primary and backup regs so all parts, etc are interchangable (same reg, different coloured diphragm cover). 2. I lead recreational OW dives so apart from night dives there is always plenty of ambient light. Even below 30' a lite coloured object (yellow) will stand out against a darker background (rest of my gear, black). At least within the depths I dive. 3. I am the only one locally diving a DIR type gear configuration (note I didn't say diving DIR :-) IE I dive with divers who are generally not trained to take the reg out of your mouth so I want to take every opportunity to improve the chances they will go for this reg (only two to choose from and the other is tucked under my chin on bungie cord, and it's black against my black wetsuit). 4. For training purposes (in my case mainly just demonstrating to a buddy but I am trying to encourage others to try the system) it's useful for the donated reg to be distinct. Have actually thought of getting a yellow lp hose for the primary so the routing is clear also? Please note though, I'm certainly not advocating some sort of silly colour coding for other gear. I just think in my case at least making the reg I donate stand out a bit seems to have merit. Comments?
