I thought some of the readers of this list might be interted in a snippet I picked up from the Australian "Campus Review", September 23-29, 1993, on research into bubble formation. I'm not up on the latest theories of micro bubble formation, so I can't put this work into perspective, but there may be those on this list who know more about this area. Vince Craig, Ric Pashley and Barry Ninham from the Australian National University have been investigating bubble formation and have published on a series of experiments demonstrating how hydrophobic surfaces encourage bubble formation under small pressure differentials. They've linked this work to DCI via the presence of such water resistant surfaces in the body. Much of their work has concentrate on bubble formation in the two to one atmostphere range. They also claim that this explains the increased risk of DCI after exertion as it can cause minor tissue damage and increase the number of sites (surface area?) where bubble formation can take place. I have no specific references, but they have published some of this work in the Journal of Physical Chemistry and in Nature. Greg Ryan gregr@cs*.su*.oz*.au*
