Hi all,
Chris Hellas sent the following post to my CompuServe address and
asked that I post it on techdiver. Apparently he is having difficulty
with his mailer, which he should have fixed soon. If you want to
reply, please do it directly to Chris (100422.2334@co*.co*).

Here's the message:

On the subject of the use of argon as dive gas element Andy Kerslake wrote:-

>>I've spoken to one individual who's tried using Argox. Apparently
Argox is ideally suited to deco, however the Argon element is
extremely narcotic. The individual concerned likened the effect to
drinking a bottle of whisky. This does not sound like a good idea ?

Any other views>>

I tried in vain to extract information from various Diving
Physiologists on the subject of Argonox as a decompression gas to no
avail, It would seem as though I had asked the wrong question on a taboo
subject. The 'ABYSS' deco software claimed to account for argon usage (
Jump in here Chris if you want ), but I could not find any real
information. I spoke to Sheck Exley @ Tek in 1994 on the whole subject and
he expressed a similar interest in it's use. The concept was one of
intermediate decompression gas use, in that the density of the Argon as
the inert gas element would allow a high offgas gradient without causing
O2 toxicity problems. The downside is one of potential ongassing of the
argon, and possible narcosis problems. Coming to a halt on the information
search was a little frustrating, but I managed to chat with Jim Bowden @
Tek 95 following his presentation on the work in Zacaton and the potential
to bottom it in 1000ft +..... Jim said that Sheck was pro-Argonox for
decompression purposes and had used it on a couple of dives with no real
problems. The schedule used was Dr X, and the Argonox part of the schedule
was treated as air for any decompression calculations ( not sure of any
programmed safety factor in the software generated tables, but I am in
thre processof writing to Jim and will post any news). This really covers
the extent of any information I have to date, but I, like many others
would appreciate any further input on the subject.

P.S...Then there's the subject of Neox!.

Regards

Chris Hellas
